For the longest time I’ve referred to myself as a geek, but recently I’ve discovered, that I am not “just a geek” the geek is only one aspect of myself, which as a whole is much more. I guess I tried to fit the geek stereotype for too long. I am more than that, better than that. I used to think that some parts of myself were in conflict, but they do not have to be, they really can coexist, and really are all just part of me as a whole. I am me, nice to meet you.
Last night I went to Target to find new earbuds because mine gave up the ghost yesterday. I also needed a compressed air can to blow the dust out of my computer before I put it back together.
That’s another story in and of itself, I had the side panel off because Monday night I was up until 2 am trying to back up a coworker’s hard drive so I could wipe it and reinstall Windows, needless to say I ran into a lot of problems, from my computer trying to boot that drive, to my power switch coming unplugged from the motherboard and me having a fit trying to remember where it plugged in.
Back to the original story. I discovered the earbuds I wanted were on sale, then I saw a 30% off shelf, and on it was three cans of compressed air packaged together labeled for $6 (before the discount), and then I saw THE mug. The mug to end all mugs. a 14oz Liquid Solution thunder mug with built in coffee press. I haven’t quite gotten the hang of it though, last night I didn’t put enough tea in it and this morning I messed up the coffee, I think the water wasn’t hot enough. But still I think it’s pretty cool nonetheless.
I just switched to using the Cool viewer for Second Life, which is just a drop-in replacement for the official viewer. The Hippo viewer was crashing on me everytime I tried to open a web link from within Second Life which was just causing me frustration. I like that the Cool viewer is just a drop in, so it works mostly like the official one, but it has better support for OpenSim. I want to give OpenLife Grid another look, I’ve checked it out before, but didn’t spend enough time there to really figure it out much.
I think I was upset about a purchase for some free to play game when I made my original post. I still don’t quite get Second Life, but it doesn’t mean I haven’t tried, and am trying again. I wanted to see what SellaBand Island was all about. So I jerry rigged Firefox to send Secondlife:// links to the Hippo OpenSim Viewer. Hippo OpenSim Viewer is a modified version of the official Second Life client for use with OpenSim servers. OpenSim is essentially an Open Source version of Second Life. I figured, since Hippo is merely a modified verion of the official client, maybe it could open SURLS (Secondlife:// links) Sure enough, it can. How I did it, was simple. When you setup a protocol handler in Firefox, Firefox will ask you what application you want to use. In this case I had Second Life create the protocol handler, but told Firefox to send it to Hippo instead. It’s really very easy especially if you have the Second Life client already installed, and have not yet made it the default to open SURLS.
When I said I would NEVER playe MMORPGS, I hadn’t considered how cheap Dungeon Runners is. I have it now, problem is, I discovered I had to get a new video card to play it.
